If You’re Caring for an Older Parent or Loved One
If you suspect that your older parent or loved one is suffering from depression or other emotional illness and might benefit from our services, you can help by being prepared to answer the following questions:
- How would you describe the situation or change in functioning of your family member? It is helpful to know how long the symptoms have existed, what makes the symptoms better or worse; whether this has happened in the past.
- When was the last visit with the primary care physician? Since undiagnosed medical problems can affect mental functioning, we suggest that your family member has a complete physical exam including laboratory tests (blood and urine) to rule out any contributing medical problems.
- What medications is the family member taking? We suggest that you make a list of all current medications including over the counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements (or have the pill bottles available). Also, list any recent changes in medications.
- Does the family member having a durable power of attorney or guardian? Advanced directive or living will? If yes, a copy of the document(s) would be required if the family member was admitted.
