Halloween Safety Tips
Note to Parents
Children’s safety is important to Saint John Hospital. And we understand how sometimes safety is overlooked in all the excitement of the Halloween spirit. Here are just a few tips from the Saint John Emergency Room staff to check before sending your children out trick-or treating to ensure a fun, safe Halloween!
Safety Rules
- Visit only well-lit houses in neighborhoods you know–never enter a house!
- Always walk with an adult.
- Carry a flashlight and try to finish before dark.
- Obey road safety rules. Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic; look before crossing, and always use cross walks — no cutting across lawns or going between cars!
- Never eat treats before an adult checks them.
Costume Safety
- Do not wear hats or masks that
- cover the eyes–try to use makeup instead of masks.
- Wear costumes that are light-colored and flame-resistant–avoid wearing big, baggy sleeves and long, flowing skirts which could impair walking or catch on fire.
- Wear comfortable shoes–flats or sneakers–and always carry an I.D. card with change for a phone call.
- Use reflective tape trim to alert oncoming cars.
Decorating Safety
- Keep jack-o-lanterns away from curtains, costumes and decorations — never leave a burning jack-o-lantern alone!
- Keep steps and sidewalks clear.
